Our Karachi
We all remember
Karachi
's past with fondness when it was the city of lights,
recognized for its spirit, vigor and pleasant surroundings. A
past in which citizens played an active role in its destiny
and future planning.
A
mega city,
Karachi
is the largest metropolis of
Pakistan
Karachi
is also one of the largest and most densely populated cities
in the world. Its
current population is estimated to be eighteen million people
and this is predicted to rise to almost double its size (32
million) in another ten years or so Karachi
faces several environmental threats and challenges, of which
water, sanitation and sewerage issues are paramount.
The
solutions to these problems therefore should be built around
participation by both government and citizen groups, so that
both may take actions as part of their duties and
responsibilities to make
Karachi
a city where safe drinking water is available to all, sewerage
and solid waste. One approach to this problem is the
revolutionary Karachi Water Partnership Model which encourages
all stakeholders to take ownership of their scarce water
resources and enables them to employ in more efficient,
equitable and ecologically sustainable practices and
management of these resources.
Let
us all join hands in working together so that we can leave our
children with a healthy, clean and green
Karachi
.
